NewAARP membership at $12/year — includes Medicare guidance, travel discounts, and Rx savings
See this item!AARP membership is currently available at $12 for the first year — down from the regular $16. At that price, the membership pays for itself quickly through the discounts it unlocks, particularly on prescriptions and travel.
What the membership actually gets you
The AARP Pharmacy Rx discount is the most immediately valuable benefit for most members. The card is accepted at most major pharmacy chains and can reduce prescription costs by 10–80% on generic medications. There’s no income requirement and it can be used alongside — or instead of — Medicare Part D depending on which gives a lower price for a given medication.
Travel discounts include negotiated rates at major hotel chains (typically 10–15% off Best Available Rate), discounts with rental car companies, and deals on cruise bookings. These add up quickly for anyone who travels more than once a year.
The Medicare guidance benefit
AARP provides access to advisors who can walk you through Medicare choices — Part A, Part B, Part D, and Medigap supplemental plans — without trying to sell you a specific plan. During Medicare open enrollment (October 15 – December 7), this is genuinely valuable. Independent guidance from someone not earning a commission is difficult to find elsewhere.
One note
AARP also sells insurance products (through United Healthcare and others). These are separate from the membership and carry their own costs and terms. The membership itself does not lock you into any insurance products.
